Anyone building or renovating needs to know their contractors and subcontractors are properly licensed and insured to do the work.

The challenge with home technology professionals is that we DO NOT require special certifications or licenses to do work. You will find every bob, dick and harry that offer TV installations and yes of course they can do all of the automation you are dreaming of. Maybe they do this on the side and are actually running a chiropractic clinic by day but have always “loved technology”.

So guess what? You’ve just become their next science experiment. Cross your fingers and as we say in the industry, “Plug N Pray”.

If you are considering hiring a home technology professional, consider first and foremost the references and who referred you to them. What kind of work have they done in the past? Will the work at your home be similar in scope to their experience and will the staff currently working with them have the knowledge to do what you want.

Don’t trust your project to anyone that can save you a bit of money on equipment. In the long run, you will be frustrated and it will cost you a lot more money to fix it after they leave you hanging.

CEDIA offers industry training and you should only hire a properly trained firm. CEDIA certifications don’t guarantee the work, but it is a great place to start.
